Our plan is to sail the seas, using the best of the trade winds and ocean currents, to visit areas where marine habitats and species are particularly vulnerable or threatened. In addition, it is important to us to celebrate those projects where marine conservation has provided successful outcomes and share learnings.
The sailing vessel which will make our expedition possible is “Pèlerin”, an aluminium OVNI 435, built in 2007 at the Alubat factory in Les Sable D’Olonne, France. She has been specially modified to be a floating home and base camp for exploration.
Our terrestrial base for several years has been Falmouth, UK whilst enjoying boat-based summers aboard s/v Forever Changes, searching for and photo-identifying the basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus). This has involved sailing the western seaboard of the UK, from the beautiful coasts of Cornwall and Devon, up through the Irish Sea to the Small Isles and the Sea of the Hebrides, in western Scotland.
In 2008 we will begin our global expedition, taking Wave Action to a variety of destinations. Our preliminary route and schedule is noted here, but will be amended as and when plans change.
